An all-weather road from Baramita to Matthew’s Ridge in Region One (Barima/Waini) to facilitate travel to the remote Carib community will be constructed when the rainy season ends.

Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Harripersaud Nokta made that disclosure while speaking at a press conference at the GTV 11 studios on Wednesday about the number of projects the ministry will undertake this year.

Nokta said that based on works completed in the ten administrative regions over the past decade, it is anticipated that the regions will complete 98% of their work programmes.

In the past, Baramita which is populated mainly by the Caribs was virtually inaccessible. There is a forest trail in rough terrain that links the community to Matthew’s Ridge but travel takes three to four days.

Other projects to be undertaken include the extension of the Charity Secondary School and the rehabilitation of laboratories, the dispensary block and the physiotherapy department at the Suddie Hospital in Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam).

In Region Three (West Demerara/Essequibo Islands), the major project there would be the Leonora Road Improvement Programme.

In Region Four (Demerara/Mahaica) the main projects are the rehabilitation of a bridge at Second Creek, Kuru Kururu; the construction of a practical instruction centre at Buxton, and the construction of the main road in Bare Root, East Coast Demerara.

The rehabilitation of the Rosignol Secondary School, the extension of the Cotton Tree Primary School and the extension of three miles of canal at Perth/Biaboo are also to be done this year in Region Five (West Berbice/Mahaica).

The rehabilitation of irrigation regulators at Black Bush Polder in Region Six (East Berbice/Corentyne) is in train for this year; and in Region Seven (Cuyuni/Mazaruni) the major works will include the construction of a concrete dormitory for boys at the Waramadong Secondary and the resurfacing of roads in Bartica.

In Region Eight (Potaro/Siparuni) the works include the acquisition of one D-4 bulldozer for road and land clearing; one ambulance for Mahdia and the construction of a mess hall for the Paramakatoi Secondary School dormitory facilities.

In Region Nine (Upper Essequibo/Upper Takutu) the construction of the sub-treasury building and the construction of a road from Lethem to Aishalton are the main projects, while the rehabilitation of the regional sub-office at Kwakwani and the excavation of three new drainage canals at West Watooka will be the major projects in Region Ten (Upper Demerara/Upper Berbice).
