In the absence of a police witness, the Preliminary Inquiry into the charges against Nazir Hamid and Yusuf Rahaman, the two men accused of murdering orphan Raheem Abdool, was deferred yesterday.

The hearing will continue today.

Senior Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle adjourned the hearing upon a request by State Prosecutor Simone Bullen, who told the court that the prosecution could not further its case in the absence of Detective Constable 18295 Anantram Jagnandan.

Bullen said that while another witness was present his testimony would be irrelevant without the completion of Jagnandan’s testimony.

Hamid, 37, the former acting CEO of the Shaheed (Sad’r) Boys Orphanage and his employee Rahaman, 26, called `Kenneth,’ are jointly charged for the murder of 14-year-old Abdool, who resided in the institution until his death. Attorney-at-law Vic Puran is representing both of the accused.
