President Bharrat Jagdeo and PNCR Leader, Robert Corbin resumed their discussions yesterday but up to press time no statement on their discussions had been issued.

Stabroek News understands that they were unable to agree on the composition of the Disciplined Services Commission to inquire into the operations of the Disciplined Forces.

The parliamentary motion passed last week also requires them to decide on their nominees to take "account of the need to consult broadly with human rights and other organisations."

The motion also stipulated that the persons nominated "shall be drawn from qualified and competent persons with senior level Police Force, other Disciplined Forces, Human Rights organisations, management, or any other relevant discipline or area of expertise."

When they met on Monday, Stabroek News understands that the President and Corbin exchanged the names of their nominees to sit on the five-member commission and began their consultations on the appointment of a chairman. The motion that established the commission provides for the President to consult with Corbin on the appointment of the chairman and for the two leaders to each nominate two members.

Stabroek News understands that among the other issues which the President and Corbin dealt with at their meetings on Monday and yesterday are the establishment of a mechanism to monitor the implementation of decisions which they take; and the work of the joint committees on local government and depressed communities which they reconstituted to continue the work started during Jagdeo/Hoyte dialogue process. The issue of arrangements for the efficient functioning of the various parliamentary committees and the infrastructure to support their efficient functioning was also discussed.
