The PNCR believes its participation in the now cancelled Wilton Park Conference on Guyana would have provided a useful opportunity for the party to present its views on the way forward for the country.
The PNCR had accepted the invitation and had already selected participants but the UK government cancelled the conference following concerns raised by the Guyana government. Clare Short, former UK Secretary for International Development, had proposed the conference last October as a way of trying to break the political impasse between the PNCR and the PPP/C.
A statement, read at the party’s press briefing on Thursday, described the PPP/C’s position as hypocritical since it was the President and the PPP/C who had approached the British for assistance in the resolution of the political impasse in Guyana.
