BRAZILIAN police are intensifying investigations into the death of kidnapped Lethem businessman, Mohamed Khan, whose body was discovered Saturday in Sao Silvestre, some 80 kilometers from the Boa Vista capital of the state of Roraima.
Guyana Police Force ranks were present when Khan’s body was found.
A top police officer here says Brazilian police are carrying out full investigations because it is in their jurisdiction and when the case is complete the local police will be informed and necessary documentation will be sent to Guyana.
The body of Khan is reportedly still with the Brazilian authorities. It is expected to be handed over to relatives for burial later this week.
Relatives positively identified the remains from several personal belongings. A gold ring, pieces of garments, footwear and sunglasses, these items convinced relatives that the remains were indeed that of the missing Lethem businessman.
Khan was abducted on June 2 by a group of Brazilian policemen while he was en route to Boa Vista on business.
The dead man’s abductors had demanded $5M for his safe release. A few days after Khan’s abduction, Brazilian police discovered the body of a health worker and it was then requested that forensic investigators come into play in order to match the evidence of the corpse that was discovered to determine whether it was that of Khan.
