Cellular customers in Guyana can look forward to the new and exciting features of Short Messaging Service (SMS) and Voicemail. The service will be provided for landline customers as well.

The Guyana Telephone & Telegraph Company (GT&T) will officially launch the new service on July 15, 2003.

The company in a press release said the Public Utilities Commission on June 26 issued an order approving the service, with significant modifications and application for the rates for providing the service.

SMS has the ability to send and receive text messaging to and from mobile phones in near real time.

The company explained that the service is based on a short “stored and forward” concept. Short messages sent by a customer are stored in a short Message Service Centre and subsequently delivered to the recipient’s mobile phone.

It would be particularly attractive to the technology-smart younger generation who use the pre- paid service. Customers will be charged a “per message” rate.

The mobile voicemail operates in an identical manner to the wire line system, with the calling party being directed to the customer’s voicemail box after a specified number of rings.

GT&T said the new service just being given consideration by the PUC represents a part of the new service the company plans for its subscribers.

The company said it recognizes that mobile is the future and intends to make it exciting for its valued customers.

The expansion and modernization of the cellular service has not affected the further development of the landline system, as GT&T, despite uneconomic rates, continues to roll out services around Georgetown and in several rural and remote areas in Guyana.
