The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) is commemorating two important but tragic events in Guyana’s recent political history in East Berbice/Corentyne.

Following the wreath-laying ceremony held yesterday by the party’s women’s (WPO) and youth (PYO) arms, the PPP will hold a public rally on Sunday, July 20th. at the Number 63 Village Ballot Box Martyrs Square at 4pm.

President Bharrat Jagdeo will address this remembrance rally. Other speakers will include PPP/C Members of Parliament and Central Committee Members Cyril Belgrave and Zulfikar Mustapha and other Party officials. This rally will be preceded by a march starting at 3pm.

On July 21st 2003, the PPP will mark the first anniversary of the slaying of Balram Kanhai, a PYO activist. Kanhai, who hailed from the Essequibo Coast, was shot by armed gunmen when the vehicle he was traveling in was fired upon at Rose Hall. He was at that time attending the PPP Congress at Rose Hall on July 20-21, 2002.

A vigil will be held at Rose Hall Arch on Monday, July 21st. commencing 5pm in Kanhai’s honour.

There will be reflections and an interfaith prayer at the vigil. Information Liaison to the President and PPP Executive Committee Member Robert Persaud will lead in the reflections.

The Party is inviting all Guyanese, including the media, to attend these commemoration activities across East Bebice.
