LOCAL authorities of Rose Hall, East Canje, are likely to get Government help for technical assessments of community projects.

President Bharrat Jagdeo, who held a meeting with residents of the area Saturday, made the offer of help after hearing several complaints from them.

He said he could send some personnel to do technical assessments of projects and train Neighbourhood Democratic Council officials to understand the Government’s procurement system.

At the meeting at the Rose Hall Primary School, residents complained about inadequate roads, water, electricity, telephone service and toilets at the school.

Some also reported pension payment delays and increasing drug use by youths.

President Jagdeo said some $3 billion has been allocated to Berbice in the 2003 national budget, but advised that there are more demands than resources and the Government does not have money to deal with all the problems in the country.

He urged local authorities to ensure allocations are used more beneficially and to avoid corruption, and called on religious organisations to play a greater role in guiding youths.

Minister of Housing and Water, Mr. Shaik Baksh, Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Satyadeow Sawh and Regional Chairman, Mr. Kumkarran Ramdass were among the team of officials accompanying the President on a hectic weekend schedule in East Berbice. (Nivedta Kowlessar)
