O’NEIL King, an occupant of the car in which University of Guyana (UG) student Yohance Douglas was killed, began giving evidence yesterday at the preliminary inquiry (PI) into the murder charge against the policeman accused of the unlawful killing.
The 17-year-old witness, led by State Counsel Jo-Ann Barlow from the Chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), completed his evidence-in-chief before Acting Chief Magistrate Juliet Holder-Allen.
King was also cross-examined by Senior Counsel Bernard De Santos, who is representing the number two accused, Mahendra Baijnauth.
Other attorney-at-law Mr. Compton Richardson, for co-accused Gerald Alonzo, was absent from yesterday’s proceedings and will get the opportunity to cross-examine the seventh deponent in the case after De Santos concludes his questioning when the PI continues on September 9.
Police Constables Baijnauth and Alonzo were charged with the capital offence after Douglas was shot dead in Sheriff Street, Georgetown, last March 1.
Baijnauth faces a separate charge of attempting to murder of Ronson Gray, another of Douglas companion who was injured by Police gunfire while travelling in the same vehicle.
