The Regional Democratic Council (RDC) of Region Six - East Canje/Corentyne - is advising that rice farmers revert to crop synchronization.

Regional Chairman, Mr. Kumkaran Ramdass, made the disclosure at a recent symposium under the theme 'The role of standardization in the development of the rice industry', at Corriverton, Berbice.

He urged planters to commence the cultivation process in togetherness, adding that this initiative would significantly contribute to better water management and an effective and efficient drainage and irrigation system.

Nothing that Region Six has about 500 miles of primary and secondary canals.

The Chairman explained that it would also assist the ROC and the Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDC's) to prepare drainage and irrigation structure for the seasonal rice crop.

He pointed out that the administration is spending close to $40M annually to purchase fuel for the five-irrigator pumps.

Mr. Ramdass declared that a great percentage of the allocation could be spent for realizing other needy amenities, if farmers adhere to and apply the crop synchronization practices.

He remained optimistic that this move will also enhance farmer's capabilities to contain rice pests and diseases.

The ROC spokesman lauded farmers for contributing to economic development and assured them of a significant increase in budgetary allocation for agriculture development in the ancient county next year. (Arjune Poonai)
