Two more depositions taken in Douglas murder case

TWO more witnesses completed their testimony yesterday when the preliminary inquiry (PI) into the murder charge against the policemen accused of killing University of Guyana (UG) student Yohance Douglas continued yesterday.

One of the two who gave depositions to Acting Chief Magistrate Juliet Holder-Allen was Police Inspector Ian Amsterdam.

The witness, who is attached to the Special Target Force known as ‘Fountain Base’, in the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), was cross-examined by other attorney-at-law Mr. Compton Richardson and Senior Counsel Bernard De Santos, who are representing co-accused Mahendra Baijnauth and Gerald Alonzo.

Amsterdam was also re-examined by State Counsel Jo-Ann Barlow from the Chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Earlier, the Defence Counsel declined cross-examination of another Prosecution witness, policeman Patrick Carter.

Baijnauth and Alonzo are charged with the capital offence following the March 1 fatal shooting of Douglas in Sheriff Street, Georgetown.

Baijnauth faces a separate charge of attempting to murder of Ronson Gray, another Douglas’ companion who was injured while travelling in the same vehicle with the deceased.

The pre-trial proceedings will resume on September 23.
