PNCR leader, Robert Corbin, has corrected a report in yesterday’s Stabroek News which said that Irish human rights activist Maggie Bierne had been nominated for the Disciplined Forces Commission by the PNCR.

Corbin said he had made the nomination in his capacity as Leader of the Opposition after having consultations with various organisations. He added that Bierne’s name was picked from a list of other names.

Bierne was absent from Monday’s swearing in ceremony because of the refusal of the government to cover the cost associated with her assignment in Guyana.

The commission is, among other issues, to review the operations of the police force.

Others sworn into the Commission were Justice Ian Chang as Chairman, Senior Counsel, Charles Ramson, attorney-at-law Anil Nandlall and Guyana Review editor, David Granger.

Speaking to Stabroek News from Jamaica on Tuesday, Commonwealth Secretary-General, Don McKinnon said that he would be contacting other organisations and stakeholders on the issue. He said that if, as a result of dialogue, the leaders of the two main parties agreed that Bierne’s visit was necessary then the Commonwealth was willing to help.
