Playing in their respective quarter final round matches, Denise Jeffrey taught her daughter Kimberley Jeffrey a lesson in squash by beating her 9-5, 9-2, 9-0, while big sister Andrea King made light work of her little sister Daina, thrashing her 9-0, 9-3, 9-2.
By virtue of her victory, Denise Jeffrey, the defending ladies champion, was slated to meet her niece Andrea King, the number four seed, in one of two semi-final matches.
Andrea’s sister Kristina, the number three seed, was billed to take on her aunt Kathy Shuffler (Denise’s sister) in the other ladies semi-final last evening.
In men’s action on Friday night, the top seeds all advanced to the semi-final round without a bother.
Defending men’s champ-ion Shawn Badrinauth kept Ryan Farnum at the back court for most of the three games played between them, forcing the latter to make errors on both his forehand and backhand. In the end, Badrinauth came out on top, winning 9-1, 9-2, 9-0.
Canadian based Guyanese Julian Chin lost his first game to Jerry Bell by a 7-9 margin, but recovered well to win the next three 9-1, 9-7, 9-4 in a lacklustre affair.
Both Chin and Bell tried to outdo each other with soft touch shots (drop shots) in the first game and that apparently set the tone for the remainder of the match, since neither of the two worked up a sweat.
In other results, Regan Pollard, a former national champion, defeated Dennis Dias 9-7, 9-6, 9-6, Robert Fernandes, last year’s runner up, beat Stanley Marcus Jr 7-9, 9-0, 9-5, 9-6, Damien DaSilva defeated Kristian Jeffrey 9-4, 9-5, 9-0, Tariq Williams beat Andy Gouveia 9-5, 9-2, 9-2, Kristina King got past Tifany Solomon 9-3, 9-5, 9-6, Andrea King beat Daina King 9-0, 9-3, 9-2 and Kathy Shuffler disposed of Chelsea Fung 9-0, 9-0, 9-0.
Last night’s men’s semi-final was a repeat of last year’s. Badrinauth was down to take on Chin and Fernandes was billed to face Pollard.
Guyana will host the Junior Caribbean Championships later this month, while the Senior Caribbean Championships will be held in Barbados next month.
