World Boxing Council cruiserweight champion Wayne `Big Truck’ Braithwaite has frowned on an offer by Odinga Lumumba to manage him stating that at present he does not need someone to work in that capacity.

Speaking with Stabroek Sport from his Brooklyn home yesterday Braithwaite said that he has had enough of managers and is prepared to go forward “managerless.”

“Mr. Lumumba called and made a demand not an offer. He told me that he was giving me 24 hours to respond to him. I don’t bend to demands,” Braithwaite said.

“I don’t need a manager at this time. The last manager I had didn’t do what he was supposed to but I’m alright now. The last thing I need now is people making demands.”

Lumumba, the World Boxing Association Latin America 1995 Promoter of the Year, told Stabroek Sport on Monday that he contacted the world champion and made an offer to manage him for one year free of cost.

Lumumba argued that weak management is doing an injustice to the Guyanese and resulted in Braithwaite being disrespected in the international community.

The promoter also claimed that ineffective management was the reason for his rematch with Vincenzo Cantatore being postponed four times in as many months.

“I’m prepared to manage Braithwaite for free because I think he needs help. I think he has been taken advantage of and as Guyanese we need to rally around him,” Lumumba said.

Braithwaite, whose mother assists with the managerial duties, said he requested Lumumba chat with his mother. “He didn’t want that. All he said was that I’m giving you 24 hours to make up your mind, take it or leave it.”

“I have been getting along fine all the time. I don’t see the need to change that now.”
