Two Kings were transformed to `Queens’ on Monday night, when the boys and girls individual competition of the Western Union/Supligen Caribbean Junior Squash Championships climaxed at the Georgetown Club.

Siblings Andrea and Kristian King were crowned girls under-19 and under-17 champions respectively.

Another Guyanese, Damien DaSilva, was also crowned boys under-17 champion, while compatriots Gerard Greaves, Stanley Marcus and Tiffany Solomon occupied the runners-up positions in the boys under-19 and under-17 and girls under-19 divisions respectively.

Kristian Jeffrey and Ryan Farnum, both Guyanese, placed third in the boys under-17 and under-19 divisions respectively.

In an all-Guyanese final, Andrea King held off a strong challenge from her compatriot Solomon to win 9-5, 7-9, 2-9, 9-2, 9-2. In the other all Guyanese final, DaSilva came from one game down to beat Marcus 6-9, 9-3, 7-9, 9-4, 9-4.

Kristina King, ranked number two, defeated Barbados’ (Bar) Nadia McCarthy 9-5, 9-5, 9-1.

In the Andrea King versus Solomon match, King won five points before Solomon opened her account and subsequently took the score to 4-5. After a number of rallies without a change of score, King took control of the game with some beautiful soft touches to the left front of the court and went on to win (9-5).

Game two saw Andrea advancing to a 4-0 lead before Solomon scored her first point, but when the score was 7-1 in Andrea’s favour, Solomon changed her modus operandi and won eight consecutive points and subsequent went on to level the games score (1-1).

Game three, though it was shorter, was just as exciting. The service changed hands five times before Solomon registered the first point. She subsequently opened a sizeable lead, taking advantage of Andrea’s mistakes and won quite easily (9-2).

The early part of game four was a repeat of the third. The service changed hands repeatedly before Andrea scored the first point. Solomon however drew level (1-1) but then she lost the service and Andrea regained her composure and had her opposition running all over the court.

With the match score at 2-2, the deciding game lived up to expectation and caused the small crowd to applaud every point that was scored in either of the two players’ favour.

Andrea made her intention known from the onset. She immediately opened her account and went on to lead 4-0 before losing the service.

Solomon failed to keep the service and Andrea went on to win the game, match and title.

The other champions crowned on Monday night were; James Stout (Ber) who beat Greaves without dropping a point (9-0, 9-0, 9-0) to win the under-19 title, Alain Mundeen (Cayman Islands) who beat Trinidad and Tobago’s (T&T) Justin Sanguinette 9-6, 9-7, 9-2 to take the boys under-13 title, Bryant Cumberbatch (Bar) who defeated Jamaica’s (Jam) Chris Binnie 9-6, 9-6, 9-4 to capture the boys under-15 title, Bo Harris (Bar) who beat Bermuda’s Laurna Robinson 9-6, 9-1, 7-9, 9-4 for the girls under-15 title and Cheri-Ann Parris (Bar) who defeated another King sibling, Daina, 9-4, 9-4, 9-4 to take the girls under-13 title.Farnum defeated Jamaica’s Brad Low 9-7, 9-5, 1-9, 9-8 for third place in the u-19 boys, while Rhett Cumberbatch (bar) beat Michael Shrubb (Ber) 9-4, 8-9, 6-9, 9-5, 9-0 to finish third in the boys U-17.
