The trial of two ex-soldiers implicated in the discovery of over 100 pounds of marijuana aboard the army flagship two months ago failed to commence on Thursday following a request by the prosecution for an adjournment. The trial is now fixed for July 30.

The hearing was set to begin on Thursday before Magistrate Maxwell Edwards after defence counsel Vic Puran sought an early date for trial when the matter was called before Acting Chief Magistrate Juliet Holder-Allen on Monday. Able Ratings Wayne Inniss of Lamaha Springs and Ordinary Ratings Shandy Stephens of Dacama Circle, Linden are facing charges of conspiracy to traffic in narcotics. Inniss is facing a separate charge of trafficking in narcotics.

The two ex-soldiers were implicated in the find of 133 pounds of cannabis. The duo was charged on July 16 after being dismissed from the Guyana Defence Force (GDF). They were remanded to prison on July 16 after denying the charges.
