Harris, a normally reserved individual, raised the temperature by describing Judah as an overrated fighter and warned he would kayo him in six rounds if he ever dared to step into the ring opposite him.
Harris, the World Boxing Association (WBA) super lightweight champion, was incensed by Judah’s remarks that nobody knows the Guyanese who will have to depend on the latter to get a payday.
“I will take him out in one round; he beat (Diosbelys) Hurtado, a bum I destroyed in the gym, Judah said, referring to the former WBA champion who Harris knocked out to become the third Guyanese to win a world title last October.
The two fighters are the biggest names in Brooklyn, and many fans here feel a clash between the two will determine the king of New York’s most popular borough.
Harris was featured on the radio station last week when he stated that Judah was afraid to fight him. As a result, it was decided to have both fighters face off yesterday.
Judah admitted he did not take up an offer to face the Guyanese last month, explaining that he was a calibre fighter who does not fight for peanuts.
He then threw down the challenge to Harris to put up $500,000 to match an identical amount from him in a one million-dollar winner-take-all clash and predicted a first-round knockout. An angry Harris retorted: “That is only your mouth, you ain’t mean that, you’re an unfit fighter who can’t last 12 rounds. Your first real big fight you lost, (vs Kosta Tszyu), I have done it and won against better fighters.”
Judah, who became the WBO champion by out pointing DeMarcus Corley two weeks ago on the same card Harris successfully defended his crown for the first time against Souleyman Mbaye, said he fought with one hand after injuring his right early in the fight and defeated a boxer who has more title defences than Harris.
The 24-year-old Guyanese then said: “I will beat you to show the world, Brooklyn and my country Guyana, that I am the best junior welterweight in the world.”
But with both fighters under rival promoting groups, it will take intense negotiating for a Harris vs Judah contest to come off in a hurry, said Judah’s lawyer who was present on the show.
Judah is with Don King Promotions while Harris is under Main Events.
