Junior lawn tennis players in Guyana will finally get an opportunity to play some competitive tennis when the Adams International junior tournament serves off today at the Le Meridien Pegasus courts.
Sponsored by Bill Adams of Adams International Tennis Academy in the United States and Rohit Persaud of Rohit’s Jewellery, the tournament is expected to attract the cream of the country’s junior lawn tennis players, said organiser Diwani Lewis.
National champion Lewis, who recently returned from the US where he did a five-month stint at Adams’ Academy, says a number of attractive trophies are at stake and he expects the tournament to be keenly contested.
Lewis also feels that the tournament will serve as excellent preparation for Alice Ally and Ezra Sue Ho, who have been selected to represent Guyana at the under-14 Caribbean lawn tennis championships in St Vincent later this month.
Manager of the Le Meridien Pegasus hotel Olivier Trinquand is expected to declare the tournament open at the 9am opening ceremony.
The categories to be contested are under-14 and under-18 boys and girls singles.
There will also be doubles play but only in the under-18 category.
Sue Ho is expected to dominate the under-14 boys category and Alli the under-14 girls.
National champions Avenelle Holder and Phillip Squires should also rule the roost in the under-18 divisions.
Lewis also expressed thanks to the manager and staff of the Le Meridien Pegasus hotel for their assistance in making the tournament possible.
