PNCR Leader Robert Corbin yesterday afternoon made a surprise appearance at the Camp Street jail for an audience with treason accused Mark Benschop.

The administration of the Guyana Prison Service facilitated Mr. Corbin after he presented himself as the treason accused's lawyer.

Sources say the meeting between Mr. Corbin and Benschop lasted for about half of an hour.

It is not clear why Corbin met with Benschop in person.

However, the visit came amid a legal challenge by several prisoners awaiting trial for years against the move by the Chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions to have Benschop's case brought to trial within three months of his being committed.

Political observers have suggested that there may be a link between Corbin's visit and an anonymous handbill accusing the PNCR leader of betraying Benschop.

The handbill, captioned "Traitor on board," accuses Corbin of "selling out the PNC and black people. Anyone with eyes could see that Corbin is not offering any opposition to Jagdeo...He has abandoned the Buxtonians. He no longer knows the name of Mark Benschop."

The handbill also calls for Corbin's removal as PNC leader.
