Velda Bernard, 22, the young woman who was taken captive by a known fugitive last weekend, is at a relative's house where she is being monitored.

Velda is deeply affected by the ordeal; she is jumpy and has to be with someone most of the time.

For this teacher and student losing her father, on top of her own ordeal and the loss of her home, was a great loss.

Yesterday she said that it hurt to lose her father in the way that he died because he was such a good father. She said she remembers him constantly.

When the Guyana Chronicle visited yesterday, Velda was asleep on a living room sofa with a Discman music system plugged into her ear. That was her aid for restful sleep.

Velda related that she is trying to cope but is very sleepy.

Many of her friends and relatives visited her; and this comforted her a lot.

Asked whether she would be able to attend school and classes soon, the young woman said that she will try but it might be difficult since she is scared of going outdoor.

Velda is in the company of relatives but her favourite is Debbie, a close family friend whom Velda grew up around.

Debbie was trying to console Velda yesterday, while her mother; Dorothy Bernard, was out making arrangements for the funeral of her husband.

The tragedy occurred when Vernon, a mechanic, was allegedly attacked from behind by an intruder while preparing a meal in the kitchen of his Stanleytown, West Bank Demerara, home last Saturday morning.

The 64-year-old man apparently fell to the floor unconscious. One unconfirmed theory is that the intruder then doused the place with an inflammable substance and set the place alight. The fire burnt Bernard's body beyond recognition.

Relatives disclosed that Bernard's widow, Dorothy, is very thankful for her daughter's safe return, but the grief of losing her husband and all their worldly possessions in the fire was almost too much to bear.

The intruder, said to be a wanted man, abducted Velda and took her away for two days.

She managed to escape from the fugitive on Monday after he fell asleep and reported the matter to police. She was reunited with her mother at Wales Police Station.

The suspect, meanwhile, remained at large up to yesterday afternoon.
