GINA - A decision was taken yesterday by the administrators of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) and the Guyana Nurses Association (GNA) to take the matter of Somatie Singh's death to the Guyana Medical Council (GMC).

Director of Medical and Professional Services of the GPHC, Dr. Madan Rambarran has concluded the investigation and had recommended that the findings be taken to the GMC to determine whether a further investigation is necessary.

The initial investigation was based on whether correct procedures were followed. The Medical Council is expected to conduct a separate investigation and make the necessary recommendations to the GPHC.

The GMC meets once a month, though meetings can be called whenever an urgent matter arises.

The Medical Council will be expected to determine and recommend whether both administrative and medical procedures were followed.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the GPHC, Michael Khan, in an invited comment, said the hospital will pass on the relevant information to the Guyana Medical Council by Friday.

The GNA last week requested a meeting with hospital administrators, claiming that they were excluded from the initial investigation and therefore could not accept the findings.

Somatie Singh, who was a patient of the maternity ward, died while in the hospital. Subsequently, the administrators of the GPHC launched an investigation into her death and statements were taken from eyewitnesses.
