POLICE Constable Wendell Thomas concluded his testimony and two more witnesses were called yesterday at the continuation of the preliminary inquiry (PI) into the murder charge against the policemen accused of killing University of Guyana (UG) student Yohance Douglas.
Thomas, who is attached to ‘Fountain Base’ in the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), was cross-examined by attorney-at-law Mr Compton Richardson, on behalf of co-accused Gerald Alonzo.
After State Counsel Jo-Ann Barlow and Simone Bullen from the chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) declined re-examination, Police Constable Leon Thomas took the oath and began his evidence-in-chief.
The second Thomas, attached to ‘Fountain Base’, too, was a member of the patrol which opened fire on Douglas and others as they were travelling in a car along Sheriff Street last March 1.
That witness, as well, faced cross-examination by Richardson and Senior Counsel Bernard DeSantos, who is representing the other accused, Mahendra Baijnuath. But there was no re-examination of the deponent.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Trevor Husbands, from the Fraud Squad at CID Headquarters, Eve Leary, also in Georgetown, completed his evidence-in-chief and cross-examination by DeSantos.
Richard will get to question Husbands when the pre-trial proceedings resume on October 21.
Baijnauth and Alonzo were jointly charged with the capital offence after Douglas died from the Police gunfire and Baijnauth alone is on a separate charge of attempting to murder Ronson Gray, one of the companions with Douglas in the ill-fated motor vehicle.
