TWO more witnesses were sworn and a third completed his testimony when the preliminary inquiry (PI) into the murder charge against the policemen accused of murdering University of Guyana (UG) student Yohance Douglas continued yesterday.

Led by State Counsel Jo-Ann Barlow from the chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Police Corporal Adrin Simon and Lance Corporal John Cummings gave evidence-in-chief.

Simon, who was attached to the Homicide Unit at Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters, Eve Leary, at the time of the murder, first took the oath before Acting Chief Magistrate Juliet Holder-Allen.

He was cross-examined by attorney-at-law Mr Compton Richardson, who is representing Gerald Alonzo, but cross-examination by Senior Counsel Bernard DeSantos, for Mahendra Baijnauth and re-examination by Prosecutor Barlow were declined.

Cummings, from ‘Fountain Base’, also at CID Headquarters, was cross- examined by Richardson and will be questioned by DeSantos, too, at the continuation on October 28.

Earlier, Assistant Superintendent of Police Trevor Husbands, from the Fraud Squad, at CID Headquarters, as well, was re-examined by Barlow after Richardson did not cross-examine him.

Baijnauth and Alonzo were jointly charged with the capital offence after Douglas died by Police gunfire while travelling in a car with others along Sheriff Street, also in Georgetown, last March 1.

Baijnauth alone faces a separate charge of attempting to murder Ronson Gray, who was among those in the vehicle with Douglas.
