THE Guyana Police Force, will, from today, increase its visible presence in and around shopping areas countrywide in the form of foot and mobile patrol arrangements.

Additionally, in some areas such as Georgetown, police booths with telephones will be established and manned by uniformed ranks to whom assistance and reports of crime can be made. The beefed up police presence will continue for the next two months.

The police also wish to warn commuters to be on the alert for “opportunity criminals” and to avoid exposing jewellery and cash carelessly.

The release said that drivers of vehicles are reminded not to leave such vehicles unsecured or in dimly lit areas without supervision or leave valuables inside.

It advised those in the transportation business to desist from speeding and exercise due care and attention, since there will be an increased number of pedestrians on the roads and around the shopping centres.

Shopkeepers and itinerant peddlers are again warned about the sale of firecrackers, squibs and other explosive devices which are prohibited by law.

The Force had previously advised on the dangers of such use, and ample evidence of the harm, pain, and suffering caused by such devices is there for all to see.

It said that parents, guardians or elders, are being asked to remind themselves of the need to supervise closely, those little ones while on the road and not to let them out of their sight. Their hands must always be held firmly, the Force reminded. The police also advised pedestrians not to cross or attempt to cross the road from behind stationary vehicles.

The police press release also advised that persons who wish to conduct transactions at the banks should place emphasis on proper security and be on the lookout for strangers or suspicious looking characters who may lurk nearby awaiting the opportunity to pounce.

Generally, the Guyana Police Force advises that all citizens be on guard against ‘confidence tricksters’. These persons, quite often with criminal intentions, are sometimes smartly dressed and have a sweet tongue. At the end of their conversation, you are often left poorer, feeling quite helpless and in much distress, the Force warned.
