THE People’s Progressive Party said yesterday that Mr. Moses Nagamootoo’s public indication of interest in running for President in the 2006 general elections is not intended as a challenge to President Bharrat Jagdeo.
In a statement to the media, the ruling party said that Nagamootoo, a Central and Executive Committee member is aware that there has been no change to the party’s “well-established internal mechanism” for nomination and selection.
The full text of the press release reads:
The recent public statements by Central and Executive Committee Member Mr. Moses Nagamootoo are being exploited by persons and sections of the media to suggest that there are divisions in the Party and its leadership with regards to several matters, including:
1. Unity of the Party’s leadership
2. The Party's leadership support for the Presidency and the
Government's economic and social programmes
3. The Party's internal governance mechanisms
4. The direction of the Government-PNCR Constructive Engagement
The PPP wants to place on record that notwithstanding Mr. Nagamootoo's declared interest in the Candidature for the 2006 Presidency, he is aware that there exists a well-established internal mechanism for nomination and selection. Mr. Nagamootoo is aware that the Party has made no change to that procedure. He is also aware that that mechanism has not been activated.
Mr. Nagamootoo has assured the Party that his declaration was not intended as a challenge to the incumbent President Bharrat Jagdeo as he continues to support his Presidency.
In accordance with its Constitution, the Party has well established and functioning mechanisms to accommodate differences, among the members and leadership. These mechanisms allow for common party positions to be arrived at after full deliberations.
Mr. Nagamootoo is a part of the Party leadership, which remains united in its support of the Government's social and economic programmes.
The PPP Executive Committee met on Friday, November 21 for its weekly regular session with the attendance of Mr. Nagamootoo and reaffirmed the above stated positions.”
