WORK on the construction of a runway for the Ogle Municipal Airport is due to begin by January 15 next year.

Construction work on the terminal will commence in March and be completed by the end of next year, Airport Manager Mr. Anthony Mekdeci said yesterday.

Mr. Mekdeci reported that drainage works began during last week and about 25 per cent of it has been done so far. The remaining is due for completion by yearend.

This is the first step being taken before building the runway could be started.

He was speaking during a brief ceremony at the proposed site for the airport terminal building where prayers were offered by representatives of Guyana's three main religions - Christian, Hindu and Muslim - to bless the project.

The runway will cost about US$800,000, while the terminal building is estimated to cost US$200,000. The project is not likely to interrupt regular flight operations at Ogle while construction is going on there.

Transport Minister Mr. Anthony Xavier who also visited the site said he was happy that this project, which was "a long time in the making," is set to take off.

Mr. Xavier said the runway, when completed, would not only enhance the area but provide easier access to travel from the Caribbean and countries in South America where larger planes could land.

Passengers traveling to Georgetown could meet there in less time than those traveling from Timehri, he noted.
