GINA -- Security and traffic arrangements in the main commercial centres of Georgetown have been intensified. This is according to Minister of Home Affairs, Ronald Gajraj, in an interview with GINA yesterday.

The Minister assures the Guyanese populace that adequate measures are in place to ensure persons shopping in and out of the city are able to do so incident-free.

He said a greater number of traffic ranks have been deployed to help curb the increase in vehicular traffic and address the traffic congestion in the city, particularly, at minibus and car parks.

As it relates to curbing crime, the Minister said there has been an increase in the number of 'plain-clothes' police ranks in and around the main shopping areas. He noted that there has of course been an increase in uniformed police to carry out normal duties.

The Minister said his Ministry is very much aware that Guyanese are looking forward to having a good Christmas, in light of the bad exchanges that occurred a year ago. He said everything possible would be done to ensure that Guyanese are comfortable during the festive season.

The Home Affairs Minister noted that persons must be able to come to the city, transact their business and return safely, unimpeded and unaffected. He said his Ministry is also aware that a significant number of Guyanese have planned to return home for the holidays and assured that their stay will be safe and comfortable.

The Minister reiterated that all resources would be used to ensure this is achieved in and outside of the city.
