RANDJESFONTEIN, South Africa - (CMC) The batsmen set it up and the bowlers formalised a 12-run win for West Indies against a strong Nicky Oppenheimer XI in the rain-affected opening match of their South African tour yesterday.

Opening batsmen Daren Ganga and Shivnarine Chanderpaul, as well as captain Brian Lara hit half-centuries to set the foundation for West Indies' total of 241 for four from 45 overs in the One-day match contested at the mining magnate's private ground about 40 minutes outside of Johannesburg.

World No.1 all-rounder Chris Gayle took two wickets, while there was one wicket apiece for Wavell Hinds, Ravi Rampaul and Omari Banks as the visitors restricted the Oppenheimer XI to 229 for five from 45 overs.

Four Oppenheimer XI batsmen scored over 30 runs: Vaughan van Jaarsveld top-scored with an unbeaten 49 from 36 balls, Benjamin Hector scored 48, opening batsman Morne van Wyk got 37, and de Bruyn hit 31.

Rampaul made the breakthrough when Goolam Bodi was caught at slip in the fourth over, but a stand of 57 between van Wyk and Hector steadied the innings. Though they made gradual progress, wickets in the 19th, 30th, 33rd and 39th overs slowed the Oppenheimer XI down.

LATE FLURRY
van Jaarsveld and Albie Morkel threatened to break West Indian hearts with a late flurry that raised 65 over the last seven overs, but the West Indies hung on to claim the result.

Earlier, West Indies chose to bat and Ganga hit 10 fours and one six in the top score of 70 from 103 balls and shared successive half-century stands with Chanderpaul for the first wicket and Ramnaresh Sarwan for the second wicket.

Ganga shared 87 with Chanderpaul, who was bowled in the 23rd over by Victor Mpitsang for 53 from 72 balls with six fours and one six. He then added 62 from 13 overs with Sarwan who was run-out for 23 in the 36th over, before perishing in the 38th over, bowled by Zander de Bruyn.

Lara arrived to raise the metronome in the last eight overs, hitting four fours and three sixes in 53 from 28 balls. He added 49 with Carlton Baugh, who scored 23 off 22 balls before being adjudged lbw to Garnett Kruger in the 42nd over and then shared 40 with Omari Banks for the fifth wicket over the last three overs.
