Lewis cops best boxer award; GDF named best gym

PAUL Lewis was declared the best boxer over the three nights of action in the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA), organised National Open, Cadet and Under-15 championships at the National Gymnasium.
Lewis of the Guyana Defence Force Gym (GDF) picked up the award after showing skill, class and good boxing techniques and execution of shots. He defeated his fellow soldier Rudolph Fraser to take the Featherweight 57kg title in front of the small but vocal crowd.
Lewis had disposed of Andel Archibald of Ricola (RIC) on Saturday night to advance.
The GDF Gym was also named the best gym of the tournament, with coach Lennox Daniels being named best coach.
The most improved boxer was Carlton La Fleur of Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF).
In other bouts in the Open category, Hendrick Pelswijk (RIC) beat John Henry (GDF) for the Lightweight 60kg class, while Iwan Azore of Republican (REP) got past gym mate Mark Solomon in the Junior Welterweight 64 kg five-round bout.
Markember Pierre (GDF) took the Middleweight 75kg title from Rayon O’Neil also of GDF, while Gordon Ross claimed the Light Heavyweight 81kg fight over James Walcott of Harpy Eagles (HE) and the last soldier Theophilus Blue disposed of Mitchell Ross (FYF) in the Heavyweight 91kg class.
The Cadets had their fair share of the action with Delon Allicock (FYF) losing to Edward Skeete (HE) in the Pin Weight 46 kg class, Mervin Sobers of Young Lions (YL), defeating Dwayne Joseph (HE), Boigny Miggins (FYF) out-boxing Earl Sobers (RIC) in the Flyweight 51 kg class and Dexter Gonsalves (FYF) getting past Quacy Miller of the Carryl Boxing Gym (CBG) in the Bantamweight 54 kg division.
Roy Sandiford (HE) beat Delbert Griffith (CBG) for the Featherweight 57 kg title and Randy Tello (YL) reigned supreme over Joel McRae (HE) in the Lightweight 60kg class.
Dexter Jordon was the first to score a victory and title, when action started in the Under-15 division, disposing of Kelon Peters (CBG) in the 60-64 pounds class, while Troy Belley (CBG) beat Andabo Pitamber (RIC) in the 65-69 pounds class.
Most improved boxer, Carlton La Fleur, disposed of Garfield Tappin (FYF) in the 75-79 pounds class, with Andrew Murray Jr. living up to the name with yet another title in the 80-84 pounds class over Roy Franker (HE), Marvin Henry (FYF) beating Alex Abrams also of FYF in the 85-89 pounds class and Quacey Craig also of FYF defeating his gym mate Daimee Allicock to take the 105-109 pounds title.
The championships started on Friday night.
