This has been another challenging year for us - with successes, failures, good things and bad things.
There are several problems in the society - perhaps too well known to enumerate - a lot of happiness and a lot of sadness.
I don't believe that this country in its short, modern history has ever put its people to the test as we have been put through this year.
We, as a people, however, have been resilient and more optimistic than pessimistic and it seems that there is a tremendous belief in the minds of people that things are eventually going to come good.
During the year, many students have graduated from one class or form to another, from Primary to Secondary, from Technical and Vocational Institutes and from University.
Many sat Secondary School Entrance Examinations [SSEE], CXC [Caribbean Examination Council], technical and vocational exams and many also graduated from the University of Guyana.
There are a lot of bright people in the country, who along with their parents or guardians and teachers realize how important education is to their welfare and future and they are missing no opportunity to take advantage of the increased educational facilities. Many students from all over the country have done exceptionally well. These young people will play increasingly important roles in the development and prosperity of our country.
Despite the problems we face, people are generally imbued with confidence and optimism in their future and that of their country.
In this season of goodwill and charitableness we read every day of the kind acts being carried out by businesses and charitable and religious organizations and individuals.
They provide good cheer, meals and gifts to homes for children, the elderly, and those who are differently able.
Regional Administrations are also doing their share to bring some good cheer and encouragement.
We read inspiring stories of people aided by relatives and friends who are facing up to sudden and drastic changes in their lives.
There are several who are grieving over sad events in their lives and we can only give a word of encouragement to these people and the organizations, institutions and people who are helping them and we add our prayers for their healing and the overcoming of their trials and tribulations. They must not be forgotten.
Let us help the religious and other organizations in whatever ways we can to provide the necessary and needed help.
There is a lot of goodwill in the hearts of Guyanese and the foreigners who live and work amongst us and with us.
As we get more fully in the Christmas Season, let us, while having a good time with our families and friends at the many parties, dances and dinners exercise restraint and not be unmindful of the comfort and needs of others.
Try not to drink injudiciously the optimum amount of caution in driving or riding and do not speed but observe all the traffic rules and regulations and have due consideration for others, especially children.
A Very Merry and Blessed Christmas to all of you and A Happy, Prosperous and Peaceful New Year.
