Former champions Guyana begin their quest to recapture the Red Stripe Bowl trophy, symbol of limited-overs supremacy in the West Indies when they oppose upstarts the West Indies -U-19’s today in the opening Zone `B’ fixture at the Antigua Recreation ground.
The Guyana team will be led by new captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who along with fellow West Indies player and vice-captain Ramnaresh Sarwan, is expected to shoulder the brunt of the team’s batting.
While openers Krishna Arjune and Ryan Ramdass are both newcomers, the middle-order in Chanderpaul, Sarwan, Narsingh Deonarine, Lennox Cush and Travis Dowlin is the strongest department in the Guyana line-up.
While the spin-duties are well taken care of in the hands of the capable Mahendra Nagamootoo and Neil Mc Garrell with support from off-spinners Cush and Deonarine, it is the fast bowling which will face the greatest test.
Rayon Thomas has lots of potential and this could be a coming-out tournament for him, while Rayon Griffith and Esaun Crandon will be looking to capitalise on the absence of Reon King, in South Africa and Colin Stuart, who is taking a break.
The West Indies under 19 will be led by wicketkeeper/batsman Denish Ramdin who should spearhead the team’s batting.
Ramdin should receive support from Guyana’s Assad Fudadin, Liam Sebastian and Trinidad’s Lendl Simmons.
Ravi Rampaul will spearhead the U-19’s bowling with support from Mervyn Matthews. Guyana’s Zamal Khan and Sebastian will perform spin duties.
