The Guyana Football Federation will be putting on telescopic lens in an attempt to look far and wide for potential additions to the national Under-23 team after Guyana’s moved into the second round of the CONCACAF Olympic Qualifier.
The GFF is considering the possibility of acquiring overseas-based players for the Under-23s that will play a home-and-away tie against tough Costa Rica next month.
GFF president Colin Klass said his organisation has already identified at least one player from abroad who could be a part of the side to face Costa Rica.
Guyana was defeated 2-1 by Barbados in the return leg of a home-and-away tie on Sunday, but moved into the second round on a 5-3 aggregate after defeating Barbados 4-1 in the first-leg match here on September 8.
Striker Devon Millington struck the lone goal for Guyana late in the second half after Barbados held a threatening 2-0 advantage.
“We are working on that right now. We don’t only want to know about who is available, but the very best that is available,” Klass said. The player identified is from London, England and Klass promised that his organisation will also be seeking for persons from the USA.
Klass said that he plans meeting with technical director Neider Dos Santos soon to plan the way forward. “I would say that by next week we should have everything up and running. By that time we should know how many players are available and how soon,” Klass said.
The national Under 23s, which returned home yesterday morning, have brought back some respectability to the sport here by winning four international engagements before losing to host Barbados.
Klass explained that the federation is working towards having at least three international practice matches for the local side before the anticipated tough encounter against Costa Rica. He disclosed that games against the Caribbean Football Union second highest ranking member Trinidad and Tobago, are on the table. Trinidad lost 3-0 and 4-3 in two practice games against Costa Rica.
In addition, the GFF plans to put the Under-23s against arch-rival Suriname. “We are now working on finalising the Trinidad games. We would like for them to come here first then we go to play the other match in Trinidad. We are also looking at an encounter with Trinidad.” the GFF president said.
The first match against Costa Rica is scheduled for November 16 in the Spanish-speaking Central American country. The return leg is will be held here on November 19. That game is tentatively set for the Blairmont ground.
