Two new police witnesses testify

The preliminary inquiry into the death of Yohance Douglas resumed yesterday before Acting Chief Magistrate Juliet Holder-Allen, with the prosecution calling on two new witnesses.
Police Constable Leon Thomas stationed at Acquero, North West District took the stand and gave his evidence in chief. Thomas, who was attached to Fountain Base, Eve Leary in March was part of the mobile patrol on the day of the alleged incident.
Thomas was later crossed-examined by defence counsel Bernard De Santos and Compton Richardson. Assistant Superintendent of Police Trevor Husbands later took the stand and testified.
Husbands is attached to the Fraud Squad, Eve Leary.
Senior Counsel De Santos then crossed-examined Husbands. Richardson is set to continue cross-examination when the hearing resumes on October 21.
Police constable Wendell Thomas was also crossed-examined by Richardson yesterday. Thomas was another officer who was part of the mobile patrol on the day of the alleged shooting.
Defence counsel De Santos and Richardson are representing the defendants Mahendra Baijnauth and Gerald Alonzo while Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions, Jo Ann Barlow is appearing in the capacity of prosecutor.
Police officers Baijnauth and Alonzo were jointly charged on March 28 with the unlawful murder of University of Guyana student Douglas.
