Former World Boxing Association welterweight champion Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis will have his first ring date at home in years this Saturday, head of Holland’s Entertainment Promotion Carwyn Holland announced yesterday.
Holland said that Lewis will be engaged in a two-round exhibition match against Dillon Carew at the MSC ground Saturday night as part of his professional card.
Lewis is in Guyana on holiday and is expected to return to the USA shortly. Holland said that the former champion, who is now ranked 14th in the world, was all for the idea when he (Holland) presented it.
“What he (Lewis) said is that Lindeners were always supportive of him and this is his way of giving something back to them. He said that he always will have a special place in his heart for Lindeners,’ Holland said.
When Lewis steps into the ring it will be the first time that a former world welterweight champion fights in the mining town. Besides the Lewis/Carew match-up Saturday’s card is loaded with potential fire works.
In the main bout the 300-plus pound `Dynamite’ Shondell Parks tackles Melissa Charles of Trinidad and Tobago in a four-round heavyweight contest.
Parks, also known as the ‘Pride of Linden’, will be in her second professional fight. She has promised to put a sound whipping on the Trinidadian, who will be making her second trip to Guyana.
The main supporting bout is a six-rounder between local junior middleweight ‘Deadly’ Denny Dalton and Trinidad’s Kevin Placide. Dalton is coming off a victory over world- rated Barbadian Christopher ‘Shaka’ Henry. The Trinidadians are expected in Guyana tomorrow. In the preliminary fights Bantamweight Leon `Hurry Up’ Moore will attempt to keep his seven-fight unbeaten streak intact when he comes against Linden’s Orlon `The Pocket Rocket’ Rogers in a four- rounder.
Moore has knocked out all his opponents and has predicted that Rogers, despite fighting at home, will be his eighth. In another female encounter Pamela ‘The Grenade’ London, for the second time in less than five months, will focus on Geraldine Cox.
The two fought to a draw earlier this year on a Smart Touch Promotion card. However, the fight of the evening is a three-rounder between minibus touts Sean `Fathead’ Qualis and Linden ‘Bony’ John.
The bout has generated its fair share of excitement in the mining town, where both are extremely popular. Reports state that ‘Bony’ is a 3-1 favourite. The first bout on Saturday begins at 8 pm.
