Some large companies which went into self-generation of power under the immediate past management of the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) are returning to the grid, says Company Chair-man, Ronald Alli.
GPL’s officials, during a press briefing yesterday at the GTV studios, said no large company left the system since they took over in April and at the moment, the power company is in discussions with a large company which is seeking to resume a contractual arrangement.
Alli told reporters that a number of customers who went into self-generation during the foreign owners-controlled period of the company “are now discussing with GPL, coming back on to the system.” He posited that this might be for a number of reasons, including initial cash outlays and the cost of replacing capital equipment. “Maybe the evidence that GPL is seeking to hold rates and possibly reduce them as much as we can [could be another reason].”
The projection of the five-year business plan is that the level of sales, at least initially, would be similar to what GPL is selling right now. Increased sales, he said, “will result in a more sustainable business plan, that is, if the other customers who were off came on now...”
