A final recommendation from the Human Resources Department of the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC) on the death of twenty-year-old Somatie Singh is expected today.
A release from the hospital issued by Guyenterprise said that the Medical Council of Guyana at its meeting held on October 20 reviewed the report of the circumstances pertaining to the death of Singh on September 29.
The statement said that Director of Professional & Medical Services, Dr Madan Rambarran, had prepared a detailed report and had requested that the council make a determination on the need for further investigation or for any other action to be taken.
The report was submitted to the council by the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, Michael Khan on October 16.
The statement said that Khan received the council’s letter in response to the report on October 29 and it was passed to the human resources department for processing and an evaluation of the recommendations.
Singh, of Mahaicony Creek died after she was forced to walk to the washroom instead of being given a bedpan, which her relatives had repeatedly asked for.
The woman had a pre-existing heart condition and doctors had required her to wear an oxygen mask at all times. A nursing assistant forced the young woman to walk to the washroom having removed the mask, according to family members. The assistant denies this.
