As Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) officers continue their investigation into the case of an American woman attempting to smuggle cocaine in sugar cakes, pholouri and egg balls, a man and a woman from Bel Air have been detained and are being questioned.
Sources close to CANU yesterday confirmed that the two Bel Air residents were picked up just around 6 pm on Thursday.
According to reports, the American woman fingered the two as being involved in smuggling cocaine in the food.
CANU sources said that following the revelation officers visited the home and invited the two down to the office for questioning. Up to late yesterday afternoon they were still in detention.
It is understood that this is the first visit of the American woman to Guyana and she was expected to marry a relative of the man.
Contrary to reports in another section of the media, the source says that no shots were fired during the exercise.
The 39-year-old Amer-ican was nabbed on Thursday morning at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri, with the cocaine fried in the items in her suitcase. The woman was expected to leave the country on a North American Airlines flight for the United States. The items weighed 2.5 kilogrammes. The cocaine was sealed in silver wrappers and placed in the food items before they were fried.
