Officers of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and their Brazilian counterparts yesterday signed a memorandum of agreement for continued support following a three-day bilateral staff conference at the Cara Inn in Kitty.

The five-member Brazilian Military delegation, headed by Brigadier General Urano Teixeira de Matta Bacellar, arrived in Guyana on Monday and is expected to leave today. Prior to the opening of Tuesday's conference, Brig. Gen. Bacellar said the conference was aimed at strengthening relations between the two countries.

Guyana shares an extensive border with Brazil and as such, the conference paved the way to discuss issues such as security threats, improving co-operation in channelling information on issues such as border protection and eradication of drug smuggling and other trans-national criminal activities. It is the second such meeting since 2001.

The visiting team paid a courtesy call on the GDF Chief-of-Staff Brigadier Michael Atherly on Tuesday morning.
