Disciplined Services Commission seeks extension of report deadline

The Disciplined Forces Commission is asking the National Assembly for an extension of the deadline for its report on the Guyana Police Force.
The commission's three-month deadline for an interim report on its findings and recommendations for the police force expired yesterday. It has written to Parliament seeking an extension of the deadline. Secretary to the Commission Gino Persaud told Stabroek News that the decision to seek an extension was taken since the evidence offered by the police force and the Government of Guyana was only heard over the last two weeks.
Persaud said the commission did not think it prudent to submit a report without careful deliberation of the evidence of these two important contributors.
So far the commission has heard the testimony of more than 145 persons in its investigation of the police force.
The commission's public hearings have been adjourned and when they reconvene Persaud said, testimony relevant to the remaining disciplined services - the Guyana Defence Force, the Guyana Prison Service and the Guyana Fire Service - will be considered.
The establishment of the commission was one of the agreements in the May 6th Communique signed by President Bharrat Jagdeo and Leader of the Opposition Robert Corbin. (Andre Haynes)
