A Western Union office was yesterday opened at Richardstown, Lusignan, to meet the needs of customers left without the money transfer service after the murder of an agent in Buxton.

Grace Kennedy Remitt-ance Services (GKRS), the local agent for Western Union, officially launched the new office at the Budget Supermarket and Pharmacy.

Chaman Basdeo, the franchise holder and the manager of the Supermarket, told Stabroek News that demand for the service in the area became even greater after the murder in March of Brian Hamilton at his Buxton gas station, where the service was once offered.

He said customers can now enjoy the benefits of the Western Union Money Transfer and the Bill Express services.

Basdeo also sought to assure customers of their safety at the new location. "We have been looking at it all the time and our major priority is security," he said, explaining that there were security features in place.

The local GKRS operations manager, Nalini Seepersaud said the new branch was "a clear demonstration of the sincerity and commitment by Western Union and GKRS to help people to solve hassles in their lives by bringing service and convenience closer to them."

There are now four Western Union locations along the East Coast and 37 sub-agents in the GKRS local network.
