Fire destroys Tucville cottage

Fire of unknown origin early Wednesday morning razed a Tucville cottage and briefly threatened a popular business nearby.
The blaze started somewhere in the old wooden building at Edun and Perry streets and was first seen by a newspaper vendor on his early morning rounds.
By the time neighbours responded to the vendor's shouts, the flames were already well alight inside the building and were beginning to lick the exterior. The house was said to be unoccupied.
This newspaper understands from neighbours that the last resident, an elderly man, had died and his relatives were looking after the property but did not live there permanently.
One resident suggested there may have been a dispute over the property.
Fire tenders from the West Ruimveldt and Central Fire Station at Stabroek responded promptly to the calls from residents who initially had attempted to form a bucket brigade.
Once at the scene, firemen quickly brought the blaze under control and managed to extinguish the fire before it had any chance to spread to the neighbouring yard where there was a tank with kerosene.
Firemen with the aid of high-beam lights then searched the rubble for clues as to what may have caused the fire or if anyone had been trapped inside.
One resident was heard saying they had seen a person running away from the building shortly after the newspaper vendor had raised the fire alarm.
