Heavy rainfall is believed to have been behind at least two fires that broke out in the city yesterday morning.

A transformer at Guyoil Service Station at Regent and Wellington Streets went up in flames at around 9:15 am after a strong rain shower. The Guyana Fire Service responded promptly and doused the flames.

Shortly after, a wire is said to have sparked at the Empire Shopping Complex on Middle Street resulting in a fire at the eastern side of the building.

The blaze damaged an air-conditioning unit and several cardboard boxes in the building. Staff members and the Guyana Fire Service later extinguished the fire before it spread.

Stabroek News was told that a wire also ignited in front of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport on Main St sometime after the Middle Street blaze.

Technicians of the Guyana Power & Light (GPL) were reportedly on the scene at all three incidents.

Efforts to contact GPL's Public Relations Officer, Marjorie Chester yesterday proved futile.
