Irish human rights activist, Maggie Beirne, has resigned from the Disciplined Forces Commission.
Stabroek News understands that Beirne, who was only scheduled to spend three months, tendered her resignation to the president and the Leader of the Opposition.
Her departure coincides with the completion of the commission's interim report on the Guyana Police Force.
The commission has not yet completed its work with respect to the other disciplined forces, the Guyana Defence Force, the Guyana Prison Service and the Guyana Fire Service, and Beirne's departure may necessitate the nomination of a candidate to fill the vacancy.
Beirne, a member of the Commission for the Administration of Justice in Northern Ireland, was nominated to serve on the commission by Opposition Leader Robert Corbin. She and former National Security Adviser Brigadier (rtd) David Granger, represented the PNCR.
Former Attorney General, Charles Ramson SC and attorney Anil Nandlall are the representatives of the PPP, while Chairman of the commission, Justice of Appeal Ian Chang, is the president's representative.
A source in the PNCR said that the nomination of a candidate would have to be done by Corbin, who is on an official visit to Canada and is scheduled to return to the country today.
Secretary to the Commission Gino Persaud told Stabroek News that the commission hoped to restart hearings by the middle of this week.
