President Bharrat Jagdeo says the government must get value for money on the resources it expends and he is hoping to use part of the funds freed up from debt relief to install surveillance cameras at the airport.
Jagdeo said he would like to see security cameras in every "nook and cranny" at the airport which could be monitored in senior officers' offices, such as the Commissioner of Police. The customs areas could be monitored by the Commissioner General of the Guyana Revenue Authority. This can be done via the internet to allow the government to get a handle on stamping out the theft of public resources, he said.
The president's remarks were made at a media briefing yesterday while he was underscoring how the freed debt servicing resources would be used in the social sectors.
