The Inter-Religious Organisation (IRO) of Guyana is extending best wishes to the nation and God's richest blessings in 2004.

A press release from the IRO, which comprises Christians, Hindus, Muslims and Baha'is, said it is praying for Guyana's families to be united in love, mutual respect, caring and protection from the scourge of domestic division and violence which claimed many lives during this year. The organisation will be formally launched in January. The release said that the constitution highlights that the organisation will "foster the collaboration of all religious organisations with a view to bringing about the spiritual, intellectual and economic advancement of the people of Guyana".

It added that the organisation is also praying for good relations, cooperation and solidarity between families and different ethnic groups in every community in Guyana whether rural or urban or hinterland.

Dialogue, respect and mutual understanding among peoples of different faiths in Guyana, the IRO believes, is a positive example for others around the world.

"We pray most specially that the example of religious cooperation, mutual understanding and respect in Guyana may grow even more in the year 2004 and [our country] will become an even more positive example to others elsewhere of the fruits of religious harmony and understanding."
