An unacceptable answer

Dear Editor,
"After more than three decades in the Police Force, I do not deserve to be harassed," excerpt attributed to outgoing Acting Commis-sioner of Police, Floyd McDonald, [09/02/04].
Thank heavens retirement has finally caught up with Commissioner McDonald, who seems to have forgotten that "accountability is the ability to call public officials, private employers, or service providers to account, requiring that they be answerable for their policies, actions, and use of funds," Empowerment and Poverty Reduction Sourcebook, WB, 2002.
Unfit for high public office or disdainful contempt for the universally accepted concept of accountability? Your guess is as good as mine.
Yours faithfully,
Heston K Rodrigues
