CASTRIES, St Lucia, (CMC) - The Windward Islands batsmen put up stiff resistance against a mixed Jamaican attack, to end the second day of their Carib Beer Series first round match on 247 for eight in reply to Jamaica’s first innings total of 266, at the Beausejour Cricket Ground yesterday.

Dominican Shane Shillingford batted impressively, to register his highest regional score of 55 not out and has so far added 48 for the unbroken ninth wicket with fellow Dominican, Fernix Thomas, who was undefeated on 28.

Earlier the Windwards were in crisis when debutant Lyndon James fell for 23 caught by Gareth Breese at midwicket, as he attempted a drive at Nehemiah Perry, to leave the Windwards 101 for six. But Shillingford joined Darren Sammy and together they added 97 for the seventh wicket, broken when Sammy was bowled by Breese for 55, made off 91 balls and containing seven fours.

The Windwrads had earlier lost their first wicket at five when Rommell Currency played back to a delivery from Richardson and had his off-stump knocked back for four. St Lucian teenager Craig Emmanuel got just a boundary, before he edged an intended cut to Hibbert behind the stumps that left the Windwards 29 for two.

The situation became even more demanding when Devon Smith was trapped leg-before by Evon McInniss for 22, followed closely by Junior Murray caught bat and pad by Lambert for 18 in Breese’s second over.

From 61 for 4, the innings deteriorated further when captain Rawle Lewis was caught by wicketkeeper Keith Hibbert soon after lunch for 21.

Shillingford’s defiant innings has spanned just under four hours with five fours and having faced 157 balls. Cunningham, the left-arm orthodox spinner has so far claimed two for 20, Richardson two for 45 and Gareth Breese two for 62. Evon McInniss and Nehemiah Perry have picked up a wicket each.

At the start of the day the Jamaicans lasted just 13 balls from their overnight position of 259 for eight.

Richardson was leg-before to Fernix Thomas for four and Nehemiah Perry played one off the inside edge (30) that gave Thomas his second wicket of the morning and final figures of two for 57, to complement Darren Sammy’s 2 for 54 and Cameron Cuffy’s two for 56.
