POINTE-A-PIERRE, Trinidad, (CMC) - Leeward Islands conceded first innings points to Trinidad & Tobago, but captured four wickets late on the third day to claw their way back into contention in their opening round match of the Carib Beer 2004 Cricket Series at Guaracara Park, yesterday.

Trinidad & Tobago, leading Leeward Islands by 11 runs on first innings, were 122 for four in their second innings when rain and bad light stopped play 13 overs early, after all-rounder Dwayne Bravo grabbed six wickets as the visitors were dismissed for 324, in reply to T&T’s first innings total of 335.

Ricardo Powell, the Jamaica-born West Indies batsman, playing in his debut match for T&T, is unbeaten on 28 and Tishan Maraj, a member of the Young West Indies team for the ICC Youth World Cup in Bangladesh next month, batting at six due to a hand injury, is not out on one.

Fast-medium bowler Kerry Jeremy and all-rounder Wilden Cornwall each took two wickets to give their team an outside chance of a come-from-behind victory.

Bravo ended with six wickets for 70 runs from 25.4 overs after the Leewards resumed on 173 for two. It was the second time Bravo has taken as many wickets in the regional first-class championship, following his six for 11 against Windward Islands at St. George’s last year.

Trinidad & Tobago made an early breakthrough when Shane Jeffers was brilliantly caught and bowled off spin bowler Amit Jaggernauth for 74 with the last ball of the second over of the day.

A stand of 47 for the fourth wicket between Leewards captain Stuart Williams and Tonito Willett ensued before Willett was caught behind off Bravo seven runs short of a maiden first-class hundred. He batted for 202 minutes, faced 168 balls and struck14 fours.

Four runs later, Bravo was again in the act with a smartly judged catch to dismiss the Leewards captain to give left-arm spin bowler Davindra Krishna his first wicket at this level.

Bravo had Carl Tuckett caught behind for 12 just before the Leewards went to lunch on 260 for six.

On the resumption, Wilden Cornwall and Jason Williams struck some lusty blows and carried the Leewards to the verge of 300 before Bravo again broke through with his first delivery with the new ball.

Bravo had Williams caught at mid-off for 15 and Reyad Emrit then removed the dangerous Cornwall for 57 that left the Leewards on the backfoot on 315 for eight, before Bravo then hastened the end with the wickets of Kerry Jeremy lbw for nought and Virgil Browne caught in the deep.

The wickets of Bravo caught at first slip and Aneil Kanhai caught behind, both to Kerry Jeremy, would have lifted the mood of the Leewards after they narrowly conceded first innings points.

But Jan hit his second half-century of the match in scoring 58 and formed a solid alliance with Powell for a third wicket partnership of 79 to keep T&T ahead of the game.

Jan, however, batted two hours, faced 83 balls and struck four fours and four sixes before he was out-caught off Cornwall, who had T&T first innings top scorer Shazam Babwah caught behind for five just prior to the close to leave the match in the balance.

Cornwall has taken two wickets for 29 runs and Jeremy two for 30.
