BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, (CMC) - Jason Bennett snared a hat-trick and shared six wickets with pace partner Dwight Washington as West Indies-B thumped touring Kenya for a dramatic 12-run victory on the third day of their opening round match of the Carib Beer 2004 Cricket Series yesterday.

Set 98 to win, the Kenyans crumbled against diligent bowling and were dislodged for 85 midway the day’s final session at Edgar Gilbert Park.

Man-of-the-match Bennett sent back Collins Obuya (1), Martin Suji (0) and Peter Ongondo (0) with consecutive deliveries and finished with figures of three for 23 off 12 overs and an overall match return of eight for 68.

Washington, who triggered an early slide, ended with three for 23 off 15 overs, left-arm spinner Anderson Sealy supported well with two for 11 off eight overs, and Gregory Mahabir’s superb run-out of Lameck Onyango clinched maximum points for the West Indies-B.

“I am very, very happy. I thought we bowled well right throughout the game, and we fielded very well,” winning coach Roddy Estwick told CMC Sport after the game.

Beginning their run chase just before the lunch break, the Africans plunged into immediate trouble when Washington sent back opener Brijal Patel and number three batsman Hitesh Modi -- both without scoring -- in the first over of the innings.

Patel was caught behind off a no-ball from the first ball of the over, And Washington, a 2003 Shell Academy graduate, redeemed himself immediately when he trapped the right-hander leg before wicket.

Generating lively pace, Washington then forced Modi to edge to teenager Lendl Simmons at first slip with the last ball of the over.

From a lunch time position of six for two, Kenya staged a mild recovery when Steve Tikolo (20) and Ravindu Shah (13) added 36 runs for the third wicket.

But Sealy struck twice in the post-lunch and triggered a collapse as The Kenyans slumped to 67 for five at tea.

Sealy sent back Tikolo at 38 for three when the Kenya captain mis-timed a drive to cover where Danza Hyatt took a tumbling catch running back.

Two runs later, Shah edged an attempted drive off Sealy to Antonio Thomas at backward point, and without addition to the score, first-innings top-scorer Maurice Odumbe (2) holed out to Assad Fudadin at short third man when he flashed at a delivery outside the off-stump from medium pacer Thomas.

Kenya, who led by 52 on first innings when they scored 149 in reply to the West Indies “Development” side’s 97 all out, then failed after tea to secure the additional 31 runs for victory, even with five wickets in hand.

They were progressing steadily and reached 78 for five when Washington had top scorer Kennedy Obuya (28) brilliantly caught at extra-cover by Simmons diving to his left to clutch a low catch.

Bennett’s hat-trick then crippled the Africans, who lost four wickets on 78.

Bennett sensationally yorked both Collins Obuya and Suji, and trapped Peter Ongondo leg before wicket to become the eighth player in regional cricket to secure a hat-trick.

And in a spectacular finish to the game, Mahabir beat Onyango with an amazing flat throw from the cover boundary that broke the stumps and beat the number 11 batsman as he attempted a second run.

From an overnight 88 for five, Fudadin and captain Dinesh Ramdin, both gearing up for the ICC Youth World Cup, had struggled to post a moderate team-best partnership of 28 for the West Indies-B before Ramdin (19) was caught at mid-off as he attempted to drive medium pacer Ongondo.

Sealy (4) and Thomas (6) were next to fall and the key wicket of Fudadin fell next to off-spinner Tikolo -- caught at cover by Odumbe.

Fudadin faced 153 balls and batted 217 minutes while scoring a fighting 43 with only one boundary.

Odumbe, who claimed five for 11 in the first innings, completed a 10-wicket match haul when he bowled Jason Bennett (6) to wrap up the innings at 149.

Supported by Ongondo (2-17), Tikolo (2-35) and leg-spinner Collins Obuya (1-28), Odumbe finished with five for 32 and a marvelous match haul of 10 for 43.

West Indies B, who collected 12 points for the win, travel to play Trinidad and Tobago in the second round starting Friday, while Kenya -- earning four points because they led on first innings -- meet the Leewards in Anguilla.
