BEAUSEJOUR, St. Lucia, (CMC) - The Windward Islands picked up a narrow seven-run first innings lead over Jamaica who were battling back on 238 for six in their second innings, an overall lead of 231 at stumps on the third day of their Carib Cup first round fixture at the Beausejour Cricket Ground.

Tamar Lambert has played another defiant knock to be undefeated on 44 while Nehemiah Perry is not out on 10.

Starting the third day on 247 for eight, still 19 runs behind the Jamaicans’ first innings total, the Windwards saw the ninth-wicket partnership between Shane Shillingford and Fernix Thomas extend to 67.

The partnership was broken when Brenton Parchment took a sharp catch At slip as Shillingford drove at left-arm spinner Ryan Cunningham.

Shillingford’s 63, with five boundaries, was his highest regional score and took him 240 minutes and 201 balls.

His departure came with the Windwards still needing another run to Overhaul the Jamaicans.

Number 10 batsman Fernix Thomas kept his composure to take the Windwards to first innings points but he was eventually last man out -- caught by Mario Ventura at square cover as he attempted a lofted drive against Cunningham.

Thomas contributed a vital 45 with three fours and one six.

Cunningham picked up both wickets to fall in the morning, finishing with four for 27 in 17.4 overs.

Pacer Andrew Richardson had two for 45, and off-spinner Gareth Breese, the Jamaica captain, picked up two for 80. Pacer Evon McInniss and off-spinner Perry had one wicket each.

The Jamaican openers then blasted their way to 67 without loss at lunch with Keith Hibbert fashioning nine fours for a fine half century and Brenton Parchment on 17.

But Hibbert was caught by Rommell Currency close to the bat off leg-spinner Olanzo Jackson with the first ball after the resumption for 50, and Parchment was bowled by medium pacer Darren Sammy for 23 to set back the Jamaican advance.

Dave Bernard joined Donovan Pagon to construct a 110-run partnership for the third wicket that was broken when Bernard was trapped leg before bypacer Thomas for a patient 55, including four fours.

Pagan fell without any further addition to Jamaica’s total -- caught brilliantly by Craig Emmanuel, who held a skied catch running from backward square as Pagon swept at leg-spinner Rawl Lewis.

There was further success for the Windwards as the left-handed Mario Ventura, top-scorer in Jamaica’s first innings, miscued a hook before he had scored, for Emmanuel to race in from mid on and take a catch low down off Thomas.

Emmanuel collided with the bowler while taking the catch and was off the field for the remainder of the day’s play.

There was one other victim claimed by the Windwards, Breese edging Thomas to wicket-keeper Junior Murray for a mere six runs.

Perry filled the breach and contributed 10 runs in an unbroken seventhwicket partnership of 31 with Lambert.

Thomas has been the leading wicket-taker, ending the day with three for 56, while Sammy, Jackson and Lewis had to be content with one scalp each.
